Let freedom ring.

(My first 4th of July in D.C.)
The 4th of July is nearly here; time to heat up the grill, break out the sparklers, turn up the radio and celebrate our independence. I don’t know yet what Jared, Piper and I will do to celebrate. Something fun, I hope. What are you all doing?

Speaking of the 4th… This morning I was watching Kathy Lee and Hoda on the last hour of the Today Show (a little lame, I know) and they had some soldiers on singing patriotic songs. It got me thinking about D.C. and the amazing 4th of July celebrations Jared and I had there. There’s something about being in D.C. on the 4th of July. It just feels right. As I was reminiscing, I got sad and a bit teary eyed. As challenging as D.C. was for me, I really miss the place. I miss the friends Jared and I made there. I miss the beautiful monuments and museums. I miss playing softball on the grass surrounding the Washington Monument. I miss the firebugs. I miss the cherry blossoms. I miss the buffalo burgers at Ted’s. I miss our little apartment with the grocery store in the basement.

California is great, but I am still working on making it feel like home. I guess I’ll have to give it some time and make peace with the fact that our 4th of July probably won’t be quite as festive as it should be this year.

Sheesh, enough sulking. I am going to spend this weekend remembering how lucky I am to live in this great country. I am blessed with endless opportunities and the freedom that so many worked so hard and died for. America, I love you. Happy 4th of July!
