We are back in sunny California after spending eight exquisite days in Spain. All in all, the trip was fantastic. We ate lots of pastries, explored big cities and small towns, and spoke horrible Spanish that we sounded out from our tourist book (okay I didn’t really say anything, Jared did most of the talking). I think it will take a few posts to tell you all about it. So, this is just part 1.

Our flight arrived in Barcelona in the evening and we rented a car. We got lost right away trying to find our hotel in the dark with printed out google map instructions (don’t ever attempt to find your way around Spain with google map instructions – bad idea). Thankfully, we had the good fortune of landing right in front of our hotel after driving around aimlessly for a bit. The fun had officially commenced! Sadly, our first meal in Spain was at my least favorite dining establishment – McDonalds. Please don’t judge. It was really late and we were tired and hungry.

The day after our arrival was spent wandering around Barcelona. It was neat to walk the narrow streets and admire the old architecture. The cathedral in the center of the city was beautiful and sat on the square where Christopher Columbus was rumored to have had his welcome home fiesta after exploring the Americas. Too bad we couldn’t be at that party!

After checking out the heart of the city we took what the folks in Spain like to call a funicular (I call it a tram) up to a castle on a hill. The castle was neat, but I was disappointed that the moat was filled with grass and flowers instead of water and piranhas. I guess you can’t always have your cake and eat it too. The castle on the hill provided great views of Barcelona and we were happy. Our first whole day in Spain was a success!

I will tell you all about our drive through the Pyrenees, Andorra and the South of France tomorrow. Right now I need to go take a siesta before my eyeballs fall out.
