I hope they grow.

Working in the garden defined my summers growing up. Most mornings my mom would wake my siblings and me up bright and early to pull weeds, pick veggies, and help irrigate. At the time, I didn’t really love gardening. I enjoyed the fruits of our labor, but I wasn’t very fond of getting sweaty and muddy first thing in the morning.
Once the garden was ready to be picked, my sisters and I would set up a table in our front yard to sell tomatoes – four for one dollar. Our allowance was whatever we could earn from our tomato sales. So...we got creative. Once we put on cheerleading outfits and roller skates and cheered at every car going by, hoping they would stop and make a purchase.
Now that I’m older, I miss those summer mornings in the garden. I miss getting dirty and sweaty and throwing rotten tomatoes at my sisters. I miss selling fresh tomatoes four for a dollar.
Living in DC didn’t lend itself to growing a real garden, so I did the best I could and planted an herb garden for our patio. Surprisingly, it thrived. We had fresh herbs all summer long. This summer, I thought I'd try my luck again. Today I planted a bunch of herbs: sweet basil, cinnamon basil, rosemary, sage, lemon thyme, lavender and parsley. Let’s hope they enjoy Utah as much as they seemed to enjoy DC.
